My primary job, social media management, didn’t even exist when I was in college. I learned to do it because I was taught to write, think on my feet, and have subject matter expertise. Chasing future “employability” through majors is a fools errand because they will change it on you every few years

I taught writing to CS majors and so many of them told me they'd have liked to have majored in something else, but their parents would have cut them off. And we wonder why student mental health is so bad?

so I feel like something about vocational training is that it actually keeps a lot of people vulnerable. Have been thinking about this a lot watching people I know pay out the wazoo for coding bootcamps only to graduate into a world of massive tech layoffs and ChatGPT

I have degrees in both music and public policy. Writing & communication skills have totally saved the day, especially in policy. They hired me for the degree; they kept me because I could write public-facing documents. (Also, I did the “diplomacy edits” for correspondence w/elected officials.)
