If he resigns the Republicans will not permit the VP to be replaced putting a Republican in second position with her out on the trail as the first woman, and a black one, in front of crowds. The assassination risk is off the chart.

A SCOTUS judge can resign conditional on their replacement being confirmed. Could Biden resign conditional on a new VP being confirmed? That would flip the politics, leaving GOP either saying Biden should stay in office now or else signing off on some Dem VP. Thinking out loud...
