Late in the day but @dancharnas.bsky.social's piece in Slate today is pure fire. It isn't so much about "Espresso" as what it draws from and why that music never got a clear shot in its time. (And as someone who was there listening to Top 40 at the time, he's completely correct in his assessment.)

This is fantastic and really sad too. It’s heartbreaking that so much music I consider foundational (I was a Prince obsessed kid in 80s England) was never really given a chance. In my mind, songs like Colonel Abrams’ Trapped were massive hits; moving to the US in the 90s was a real eye-opener.

Wow - this was so good. Analysis of the music and the music business behind that. Way beyond the “those Disco Sucks people were bad” broad strokes bits I’ve seen recently from people who weren’t there.

Boogie/post-disco/electrofunk is still VERY under-appreciated critically. Still. It is maddening. I just finished reading Steven Vass's (a bit messy but informative) book on 80's r&b and I was like FINALLY.

I've been noticing the last few years how arbitrary pop feels in comparison to other genres, so this was a nice, refreshing bit of vindication at the end of a session of "I didn't know most of this, but I can't say I'm surprised at all"
