This is the part I find most perplexing: Search is the crown jewel of Google. It's wild that they're risking its reputation for an unhinged AI feature. They've spent decades building trust in Search. Trust is easy to lose, and hard to regain once you've lost it. It just doesn't seem worth it.

What a quote! "We have definitely made progress when we look at metrics on factuality year on year. We are all making it better, but it’s not solved."

Google torching its own brand makes Elon trashing his website seem like child’s play.

We might well need to take things into our own hands, and deign search engine proxies that sit between us and the internet.

And their function will be akin to "lobby security/doormen" to filter out all the garbage that gets spewed back at us.

Search is now considered merely a way to direct unwanted traffic to users.

I wonder if they are betting on AI being more profitable than the advertising that supports search

Time for Apple to finally get serious about quality, curated search. The window of opportunity is open.

Yeah, def eating the seedcorn on some level. I also wonder if they feel that they dominate search so completely that there’s no credible alternatives? I also wonder if they think they can get training/use data so much faster this way than with small pilots that it’s worth the reputation cost.
