Juneteenth has Indigenous history. When Black people escaped slavery in Florida many joined the Seminole tribe, becoming Black Seminoles or Mascogos in Spanish. Why Spanish? Because many Black Seminoles migrated to Mexico, where slavery was already abolished ¹/

The Black Seminoles went to El Nacimiento, Mexico in 1852 and found freedom. But they still interacted with Black Seminoles in Texas who brought them Juneteenth in the 1870s. To celebrate Juneteenth, Black Seminoles in Mexico had to survive slavery, the Trail of Tears, and the US-Mexico Border ²/
