Sometimes I try to explain to people what it was like to grow up in the Just Say No era but now I think I'll just show them this video, which perfectly embodies the "every systemic problem can be fixed with a song + music video featuring some famous people" mindset of that period. Plus a blimp!

We definitely have the same anxiety! Currently looking into eq-proofing methods that won't require us to drill holes in the walls. In the meantime we've just made sure the heavy stuff is on the bottom shelves and they're not positioned near where anyone would sleep.

Read the article yesterday and it brought back *such* vivid memories of experiencing this show (and the dawn of reality TV) as a teenager, fascinating to see how quickly they tried to manipulate things for drama (and how the cast/certain crew justifiably pushed back).

I saw it at a local indie theater, packed house, knowing very little. Vividly remember the entire audience *moaning* with dread during the final few minutes. Had trouble sleeping for like a week.

Sigh...みなに幸あれ (Best Wishes to All) comes close to being a genuinely interesting horror film, and there are plenty of genuinely scary moments (plus a lot of very specific body horror). But the script is a bit of a mess and the overarching metaphor is both too obvious & not explored deeply enough.

I learned this in the early 2000s when a Japanese friend was doing a lot of speed dating-type activities, met a nice guy, and told me me, 'I think he might be a さくら, though.' She suspected a lot of the men at these events were さくら.

When it seems like none of the students are connecting with the lesson but then one kid stays after class to ask several really thoughtful questions and it just makes your whole damn day. (Thank you, thank you to everyone who has ever been that kid.)
