A lot of well-intentioned folks promoted Elon Musk as a hero of science and technology thinking it would inspire a new generation. Instead they created a monster that steals all the publicity and funding from up-and-coming scientists and technologists, crowding out real work with endless scams.

I bumped into a woman a decade ago driving a Tesla, my son and I were checking out the car. I talked to her for a while and at some point she made the observation, "Elon Musk will make Steve Jobs look like a piker." Many times over the years I've wanted to ask her for an update on that thought.

To me was just some youngish rich guy who made bank with a lucky startup and was doing cool-seeming stuff with rockets, EV's, & flamethrowers. I didn't really pay much attention to him. Then came the "pedo guy" remark and I was like "Oh no..." and took a closer look at his social media footprint...

Yup. And those of us who knew it, because we are in tech, were demonized for it. Extra fun when you’re a woman in tech. But still I see money dumped into ideas that are not even slightly worth it (ie capacitively charging roads in Indiana) because self promoting profs believe their own bs.
