And since an inclination to silence criticism has brought us to the breaking point, my fear that my criticisms will drill holes in the boat are simply less honed than my fear that silence will encourage the boat's continues collapse.

I can't argue with any of that. Real good argument we should've been drilling holes for the last two years. But also a real good argument we should've been bailing water the whole time. Real hard to see left-leaners suddenly reaching consensus on either option at this late date, so... we're screwed.
