Exactly like Ontario higher ed cuts. Plus, gov lowered then froze tuition (which would be good... if unis had other income!), & also froze salaries for 5 yrs, just as inflation took off. But govt just lost a labour suit, so Uni's are on hook for backpay. Who doesn't want backpay? But with what $$?

Oh dear oh dear. This will be all of us in Ontario before long if we aren't very judicious. I sit on the governing board of our uni, & the budget situation - over which we have almost no control on the inputs side (province has cut & cut, tuition was cut, then frozen) - keeps me up at night...

Curious why? That looks like desperation: Are they close to bankrupt? Funding cuts?

Ed Broadbent died today. A great & extraordinarily gracious man.
(How gracious? If you're ever w/ me and a bottle of wine, I'll tell you. The story in question involves flagstones, Wittgenstein, inadvertent nudity, and the actual, physical toppling of the even more gracious Mrs. Broadbent.)

We need at least -10*C* for 10 consecutive days. If it's -10*F*, all the better! The beauty of the canal (an 8km long groomed skateway, complete with on-ice cafes) is that it makes us WANT the weather to be cold as possible, for as long as possible. In winter, it's how I get to work.⛸️

All I want for my birthday is 10 consecutive days of -10C so the Rideau Canal will freeze thick & solid, & I can enjoy the best thing in the world which is skating on the canal.
Is that too much to ask?!?!
Stupid climate change. Stupid "warm" limbo weather. Spoiling winter. Spoiling everything. 😑

Your Eastern Standard Time annual reminder, that at 10:30pm, it's already midnight in Newfoundland: you can raise a glass with our Great Eastern friends, and still go to bed on time...
Thanks, Newfoundland!

The Romans (at least pre-Julian reform) inserted intercalary months "as needed", which in practice meant as politically expedient for whoever happened to be Pontifex Maximus.

Was thinking about integrity of the process / Elections Canada type stuff, but your book looks great! Ironically, I had your UBC page open right next to my Bluesky tab while I was poking around for relevant stuff. I may be in touch shortly...

Polisky, can anyone recommend scholarship on the conduct of elections in Canada (historical / contemporary)? Who works on this?
