My observation in politics - common L/R labels like "MAGA" and "Progressive" are neat outgroups to one another, at least in the reductionist rhetoric the more shrill put out. Venn diagrams of voluntary association have shockingly little overlap.

Watching French politics from the UK the last few days I'm struck with how the hard left and right are reaching out to all but the other end of the spectrum. FPP elections encourage this division, PR really does seem to be a necessity as mass communication becomes king.
