It's called the Spiral of Silence. A lot of people feel a certain way, but know dissent is punished/ostracized, and so they assume that they're in the minority and stay silent. People speaking up now is, to some extent, just vocalizing the realization that they weren't alone in their concerns.

Oh yeah, apparently the BBC didn't see the value in archiving stuff originally, so they just disposed of and re-used tapes. If any copies exist of some old British stuff at all, they're audio recordings people made of the original broadcast (since there was no good way to record video at home yet).

Yeah, I remember that. The 4-3-3-3 pattern was for 26 ep series, not the long-run series. I still can't believe they were trying to sell us 100+ ep series at 15 bucks per 30 minute episode.
