I did some layout analysis for different comics, and then I figured they’d probably be helpful for other people too. It’s really interesting how cartoonists can use different methods to create a sense of subjectivity or wrongness or slow time.
I've realized I gravitate more toward the artists with rigid grids over the wild diagonals as a base.
The latter can be done well, but even then I the favor conservative panels of older artists. When something is "off" you don't have to work as hard to show it.
That's very interesting, thank you for sharing! I've tried to analyse paneling before but never to this extent, I'll try to do it more, I feel like I learn a lot!
This is fascinating and makes me want to analyze some of my favorites!
I usually begin thumbnailing by juggling empty panels around until they fit the mood and flow of whatever is supposed to happen on a given page, so I very much appreciate looking at panel layouts like this.
Before expanding to see it was "I Won't Say I Love You Anymore", the second image instantly made me think about Dresden Codak, and how Diaz plays with the frame.
I'm just a scrub who doesn't "know" art, but man those strips fascinated me far beyond the plot. Just beautiful work.
