July 10, 1924: The Washington Times reports on yesterday's two minutes of silence in honor of President Coolidge's teenage son Calvin Junior, who recently passed away. An impressive show of respect.

This is a cool story, kind of reminds me of Ken Walter, who went from Cleveland Browns ballboy (ball adult?) to two-time Super Bowl champion punter. One thing about being a punter at Kent State: You'll get plenty of experience. Alas. Alaska Empire, July 10, 1924

I obviously didn't see what those scouts saw, but a glance at the numbers would have been enough for me to take an in-person look at Hack Wilson. He was 23 at the end of the 1923 season, had never hit worse than .350 as a pro, and had 71 XBH in 115 games in '23. Casper Tribune, 7/10/1924

Hooper's pro-con list here is also applicable to my radio/television/film degree. I'm 48 now and on my third career - now a web developer/database guy - so it's probably a reasonable guess that I will not become the radio voice of the Cleveland Guardians. Dammit. Perth Amboy News, 7/10/1924

Not my finest work in yesterday's Immaculate Grid. MVP killed my rarity score. In retrospect, the "correct" answers for MVP were probably Maury Wills-Mort Cooper-Jeff Burroughs. Oh well.

Well... there's that. I totally understand Herzog and company wanting a coke-free clubhouse, and I'd want the same thing in their shoes. But they sure didn't dump Andujar or Lonnie Smith or David Green (allegedly) or Darrell Porter for a bag of balls and a fungo bat. So something was up.

My favorite player of the decade. Could he hit? Nah, not really. But he could play 6-7 positions pretty well and could run. Guys like that allow for so much more roster/in-game flexibility.

Yesterday's Immaculate Grid. I guess I could have done better than Sheffield as the Marlins 300+ HR guy, but the post '77 expansion teams are my blind spot. Strand's failure was one of the big stories of the first half of 1924. Berti and I went to the same college, so I use him a bunch for Miami.

Judging solely on the numbers and metrics, Topper Rigney was a pretty solid defensive shortstop, but his bat was the thing that made him stand out. He had a .388 career OBP and had just enough pop that you had to respect the possibility that he'd rip one into the gap. Washington Times, 7/7/1924
