The point of the first thing was to oversell the capabilities of the tech and to convince the politicians the major social problems with it had already been identified and were being taken seriously. You talk about AI enslaving humanity so you don't have to talk about intellectual property law.

One trick there is that there are cranks who genuinely believe that - you elevate them and blur the difference between, e.g. the CEO of Microsoft and Eliezer Yudkowski.

There is no "the point of it". Different people said it for different reasons, and the fact that companies put it into a lot a stuff when it's not reliable is an argument for it being dangerous. I hate people just dismissing the pretty obvious danger bc some dipshit like Elon Musk used it for PR.

Woah, now that's a nice trick. "I can't believe we let just about anyone walk around with an AR-15 like it's some lawless war zone!" "How can you say that, we regulate this stuff, nobody's open-carrying SAWs or RPGs!"

Very not-coincidental that all the people breathlessly gushing about AI in 2023 and 2024 were gushing about crypto and NFTs in 2020 and 2021

Also if you make regulations for “AI safety” sufficiently onerous and you let the incumbents write the policies, they can use regulatory structures to protect their position and prevent new competitors from ever getting a toehold.

"Senator, we can assure you that the real, practical challenges AI presents us with are being considered with the utmost gravity. For example: what if all mankind were turned into batteries for intelligent machines as in the film The Matrix? We'd like to work closely with you on solutions here."
