De Forest spent years trying to perfect his triode design, the Audion tube, but he didn't accept thermionic discharge and thought his tubes needed to have a gas component to work properly, he was a true Edison in that he didn't know any theory but loved to experiment and self-promote.

Lee de Forest, the inventor of the triode and film sound recording, didn't actually know how his tubes worked, but the moment he had a functional prototype he immediately founded a production company to make sound films and (at the age of 50) started dating starlets.

He took a job with the LAPD because they were hiring, he was a vet, and he wanted a job in LA that would facilitate his actual career goal of becoming a television writer. He worked in traffic enforcement but was quickly promoted to public affairs and worked as Chief Parker's speechwriter.

Roddenberry quit flying at the instigation of his first wife, because he kept getting into crashes. None were due to his error, he was by all accounts a superior pilot: he survived all of them and his last crash in the Syrian desert is a pretty harrowing story by itself...

Parker was also an early champion of producer Jack Webb, who produced the "Dragnet" franchise at his instigation. Also Jack Webb and Gene Roddenberry were both Army Air Corps recruits, Webb was rejected from selection but Roddenberry served as a B-17 pilot and was later a check airman for Pan Am.

There’s a story about NBC griping about the cost of an individual Star Trek episode vs the cost of a Lost In Space ep and the Desilu producers wrote a memo pointing out that Irwin Allen’s whole schtick was just reusing sets and props between his numerous features and shows.

My understanding is that the pitch for this show was that it would be insanely cheap to produce because Fox had tons of leftover historical properties, sets and stock footage from its “Cleopatra” era. Each episode is like 80% reused material held together with James Darren dressed like a cowboy.

😠 If you give ChatGPT a list of things and tell it to label them "a" or "b" based on 100 examples, it will almost immediately start labeling things "c", "unknown", "all", etc. and you can only keep it from doing this by beating down all kinds of weird API settings like "temperature" or "logit_bias."
