I finally watched the debate after being unplugged for a week. Boring take: Based on comments from distraught Biden fans and the media accounts, I expected his performance to be worse than it was. I did see what worried people. Call me an old-fashioned news editor but I am keeping an open mind.

Have you watched the doc "Black Twitter" or other examples of how social media has been used for good? I agree there are negative psychological effects for some people but it brings together once-isolated communities. Granted, in a few cases, those are Nazis. But most people are not Nazis.

Like most things, it's complicated and nuanced, as that article notes. Nobody's dropping dead from smartphones or social media, but we all might be happier if we varied how we apply our consciousness. Put devices on DND and pend some time in the trees. The kids are better at this than the old.

People used to go to jail for this before a 1989 Supreme Court ruling. I don't think that was right, but this countercultural appropriation is an interesting development highlighted by the latest Alito revelation.
