Switch the site-selectivity of your carbofunctionalization reaction with this one weird ligand!
Lots of fun to build on this completely unexpected result, this project took us into data science and modeling to learn about the selectivity we were seeing. Check it out!

Love to see current and former students meeting each other at conferences! Dynamo 4th year grad student Cay at left and former undergrad Jisoo (who has been rocking it in @levinchem.bsky.social 's lab) at right, at the Heterocycles GRC

You should be either neutralizing the compound causing the smell in the hood (e.g. sulfides, thiols) or rinsing glassware in the hood and caring for the waste accordingly. If the glassware is still stinky after that I guess I'm stumped!

full disclosure: I feel strongly enough about this that I created a whole class on communication for chemists in my department

We really don't spend nearly enough time teaching students how to effectively communicate and it shows - and posters are often some of the worst offenders (and not just from us organic chemists). We really need to incorporate this more into our curricula

It's pretty ridiculous that students are only given the option to buy, especially since my institution rents regalia for the faculty every graduation (at no cost to us) - a rental market clearly exists!

If the smell is escaping your lab, that's a real problem - either a failure of lab ventilation, a spill, or negligence in handling a compound. So yes, I would worry.

My lab holds that if you're smelling a chemical, that's an exposure and should be avoided, even within the lab. Smelly compounds in particular we handle exclusively in hoods (in-hood rotovap, weighing compounds using sealed, tared vials, etc).

There was an annular eclipse on May 10, 1994, which I remember well from elementary school (I lived in the path of, uh, annularity? - so got the full effect of inside recess and going out in groups to see the eclipse through a pinhole)

Just a little research group update: we've had a lot of new faces here recently! We're thrilled to have Lauren Morano, Livan Borrego, and Neively Tlapale Lara as new 1st years. Roberto Leon Baxin (3rd year) also joined our group in the fall. Look out for great things to come from all soon!

They did - once a proper investigation brought this all to light, UR removed the grad students from the lab and made sure they found homes in other labs. So, at least they did right by the students once they realized what was happening (late, I know, but still).

It took too long to do a proper investigation (and boy, did they drag their feet), but to UR's credit at least, once they did, they removed all the grad students from Dias' lab and worked to make sure they all found good homes in other labs. In the end, they protected the students.

You could always mark it and dig up the bulbs in the fall to plant in a sunnier spot - or just leave be if you don't feel like it, they won't be the happiest, but they'll be ok.

Every time there's a winter weather warning we get an email saying, "we're closely monitoring the weather but remember that as a rule we don't close, and plan to maintain normal operations except in extreme weather." Given it's Rochester, the bar for "extreme weather" is very high

I'm teaching a smaller version of our intro organic (60 students vs. 350), but the DFW rate is less than 10%, and I expect it's not more than 10-15% for our larger course. 50% is a ludicrous number.

I questioned this career path when I saw the toxicity, but then realized that the same freedom that lets some get away with treating students and others poorly also lets me create the environment I want in classes and research, and change the culture of our field through my students (even if small)

Working with students, hands down - and being in the position where I can create a safe and welcoming environment where students thrive and feel supported as they challenge themselves and grow as students and scientists, and being witness to that growth

Brought my little one to campus in the morning (my spouse and I met there!), and showed her the science complex, but predictably she was more interested in the dino skulls than my old research lab 😆 (she loved the periodic table display with element samples, so maybe there's hope yet 😉)

I technically went, but not to my school's prom, I went with a group of friends from my math and science center to their high school's prom. We did each other's hair, went to dinner, hung out at the prom for a bit then stayed up late and watched movies. Way more fun than normal prom.

In addition to bringing in my group's first major grants, this summer I took on something even more ambitious: removing some lawn to build extensive raised beds and a terraced garden wall. Those spatial reasoning skills were definitely handy for building a dry-stack stone wall
