I teach history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I wrote a book about cultural propaganda in Cold War Latin America. Write for magazines, reviewing books, esp. on politics and foreign relations. Mind like a teal strap

Also the crowd wasn’t that big, it was a middle school gym plus an overflow room, admittedly assembled in about 48 hours. Earlier I asked for the criticism to be based in reality but the president also needs to be

I watched the Strephanopolous interview and Biden asked “who could get a crowd like I did today?” and said the crowd wanted him to continue. I was in the crowd and talked to people in the line and certainly these are strong Dems but we were also talking about who would be the strongest candidate

For a lot of people, the question isn't whether Biden or Trump is more fit for obvious (seems clear to me!) but whether Biden is in the necessary condition to win. People who prefer him can wonder about this. But that line in itself was totally fine

On the larger question I am agnostic, but what I do believe is that it should be made on the basis of real evidence

Look, I was there, he corrected himself quickly and fluidly. He does have a speech impediment: the issue at hand is his mental acuity, and if anything this showed me that he recognized a mistake and fixed it

As you can imagine I personally would like some adjustments to foreign policy but I don’t operate with the assumption that that moves the needle more than the price of toaster pastries

There’s a lot of “we’re going to save democracy” which is fine but it should be accompanied by a plan to bring down the price of toaster pastries or something

With a couple of hours of distance I do think it was a good performance and he seemed clear that he will continue. We’ll see how the Stephanopolous interview goes. I do wish that the campaign, whoever is heading it, would articulate an attractive vision of the future

Gaza has some similarities to Vietnam, but that can be overstated--there's no draft!--so creating a bit of distance from the current administration could help bring the coalition together

I don't know whether Biden should step down at this point or not, but I'm not convinced that because 1968 went poorly for Democrats the same would be true this time. Biden's age is not an ideological issue splitting the party in the same way that Vietnam was

I find it mildly annoying when people share photos from their vacations on public-facing social media but as it happens I needed a work trip across Europe and turned it into a family vacation. I've decided to take pictures of things that look a bit like faces and share those instead, hope that's OK

I think one reason the American right is so insane is that the only actual historical conservative tradition in this country is slavery and Jim Crow, but this can't be admitted

I hesitate to offer a single explanation, but it's hard to avoid the conclusion that the historical cheapness of land in the USA has done much to shape its culture and infrastructure

Yes, I've actually moved on to Germany too and yeah, not so much (still good trains). Some cities in the US have made progress in recent years but I don't think there's anywhere close to what I just saw in Amsterdam.

Cars are amazing inventions and fantastically useful, sometimes the best thing for job. But we don't have to design the world to artificially make them the best option for every job, as the USA has managed in most places

I am just a New World provincial but I have never seen infrastructure this good in my whole life. I realize that the American left has a tendency to romanticize Europe and that the NL is a complex place with lots of problems, so I'm not asking for it all, just the bike lanes please

The way we live our lives in the USA is generally tipped so far towards private goods and away from public goods. We can do better! We could be happier and healthier! It's not about giving things up, we can change the way we live and gain in the process

We talk about Madison (where I live, lovely town) as a good town for bicycles because there are basically two dedicated paths for bikes and pedestrians on each side of town. We're just getting around to a BRT line.

What if you still need a car? Well then you can have one! There are plenty, they tend to be smaller but you don't need really need an American armored vehicle to get to day care

It's like this on pretty much every city street outside of the historic areas which are crowded with pedestrians, or highways, but even the big city streets have major bike lanes separated from the cars, plus pedestrian space next to those. This street is basically 1/3 car, 1/3 bike, 1/3 pedestrian

Everybody knows the Dutch are famous for their bicycles. And, to be fair, it is flat, and the proximity to water moderates the temperature year-round. That helps. But what else helps? There's about as much space devoted to bike infrastructure as car infrastructure

What about kids? If they're very small, get one of those carrier e-bikes. If they're old enough, they bike too! The speed on the Dutch pathways is pretty moderate. Or the bus/tram gets you there in the same amount of time, more or less
