An editor of a very good (scientific) journal told us: "Fine, but make it 9 pages (not 56)." Spent that summer in Princeton shaving off words, cutting sections, and landed at 10.5 pages. Was mighty pleased with myself. Then the reply from the editor: "I said 9." (Eventually, we fixed that too.)
