My home island (öland, Sweden) have large limestone plains. I guess the layers of soil were always thin, but sheep (in large quantities) didn't help. Funny enough, taken away the sheep and the trees make a come back (at least in wetter places).

I just read a memoire from 1860s. A person from my home island (öland, Sweden) described his background, how he moved on to construct naval ships in Boston and eventually ended up back home in Sweden as an industrialist. What he described didn't feel too far off. Sure, different, but not too much.

An ID to vote seems like a reasonable way to avoid fraud. I believe we've had that in my country (Sweden) since forever. Surely, since 1980 (when I was first allowed to vote, in a referendum about nuclear power).

Wigforss (finansminister under den här tiden) hade moderna ideer om konjunkturpolitik. Tydligen utan mycket stöd från vare sig höger eller vänster. Om politiken faktiskt var verksam vet jag inte (det gick ju internationellt bättre efter 33), men intentionen var god.

An editor of a very good (scientific) journal told us: "Fine, but make it 9 pages (not 56)." Spent that summer in Princeton shaving off words, cutting sections, and landed at 10.5 pages. Was mighty pleased with myself. Then the reply from the editor: "I said 9." (Eventually, we fixed that too.)
