The Oregon DOC will no longer force people who are incarcerated to pay hundreds — or even thousands — of dollars for medical devices, such as hearing aids and prosthetic limbs. People incarcerated in Oregon typically make less than $100 per month.

Californians with family in prison championed bills to limit when visits can be blocked and reduce the exorbitant cost of sharing meals with loved ones in prison. It is past time to curb predatory and exploitative business models inside prisons and jails.

Minnesota just became the latest state to eliminate prison gerrymandering. This practice skews census counts in a way that creates a twisted incentive for the people who represent prisons in the legislature to keep prisons full and make them even fuller.

Oklahoma passed a law that reduces sentences for people whose convictions stemmed from their abuse — despite prosecutors’ objections and an initial veto by the governor. Getting this passed in such a law-and-order state shows it can be done in any state.

Many Americans are still deeply afraid of crime even though crime rates remain at historic lows. And people who use neighborhood apps, like Nextdoor and Citizen, have been found to perceive local crime rates to be higher regardless of actual crime rates.

A woman was hit with a $127,000 bill for a 7-year prison sentence, even though she was released after 10 months. Under Florida's "pay-to-stay" law, people are charged $50 for every day of their original prison sentence even if they are released early.

Davon Gillians was within a year of completing a federal prison sentence. Instead of freedom, the 24-year-old died as his cells and organs starved for oxygen, a condition complicated by pepper spray and prolonged restraint. Feds opt not to fight lawsuit.

Alabama passed a voter suppression law criminalizing some absentee ballot assistance, threatening the work of organizations that help voters register and cast their ballots. They could now face up to 20 years in prison (same as first-degree manslaughter).

The family of Brandon Clay Dotson filed a federal lawsuit earlier this year after Dotson died in an Alabama prison and his body was returned after an autopsy missing his heart. The family and the state filed for a dismissal, but his heart was never found.

"As police and politicians conflated sex trafficking with sex work, journalists dutifully followed along." Sex work is the consensual exchange of sex between adults. Sex trafficking and exploitation are separate issues. Sex work should be decriminalized.

5 years ago NYPD officers broke into Kawaski Trawick's apartment while he was cooking dinner and within 112 seconds fatally shot him. When asked if anyone was hurt the cops said: "Nobody, just a perp." NYPD just announced the cops will face no discipline.

For decades Idaho has locked psychiatric patients in maximum security prison cells. The patients haven’t been convicted or, in many cases, even charged with a crime. The state is finally on the verge of building a secure mental health facility.

Nearly 9 in 10 trans people in state prisons have been locked in solitary confinement. Solitary confinement was sometimes used “as a result of harassment, discrimination, or concerns for safety.” Solitary confinement is torture.
