I'm not sure how personally invested Farage was - I don't recall him mentioning it much subsequently. Plus UKIP wasn't entirely Farage's baby, there was genuinely a grass roots movement before him, other MEPs etc; the fact he set up Brexit Party/RefUK with different structures is telling, I think.
