I’ve read just a couple of these stories — I wonder if there are more cases that don’t make the news — but so far, the apostates to the right have all been women.
I was struck by this realization: "Children were not being sexualized..." by the curriculum. A stark reminder that a lot of Republican bluster is projection.
The people that I know who have had these epiphanies had also turned down the volume on their particular bigot spigot at the time. All of that noise causes the cognitive dissonance that keeps people from interpreting facts as facts, so once the propaganda goes away, rational thinking returns.
great that she found the facts and didn't just look for evidence that supported what she wanted to find. more of us could do with that kind of thinking.
What I keep coming away with is: they didn't bother doing any research before buying into the scare.
I'll give her credit for realizing it wasn't real, but I'll point out she's still a Republican.

Growing up in this environment, it’s the entire culture here.
Being legitimately indoctrinated into a right wing mindset at a young age and preaching it in schools.
Deeply ironic.
Women are much more likely to be involved with schools, so I wonder what community org would attract men’s attention in the same way.. I think about that a lot!
Perhaps relevant: if you’re in a cult (and far more of us are than we would ever like to admit) nobody can “deprogram” you. You can only do it for yourself.
