Part of the problem is that we’re taught about racism as a very overt thing, (think cross burning and segregated bathrooms) when most real life racism is more subtle than that. So even those of us who mean well can take a while to start noticing these things, and those who don’t can play dumb.

Unless it happens to you all the time, it's indirect and invisible. Racists will quietly just not hire minorities or otherwise give them a fair break. That's the reason DEI got started in the first place.
