i like it if it's quiet and somewhat unintelligible, like just barely past the white noise/music line. otherwise no i hate it and it makes me short-circuit

There's evidence from surveys that a majority of the population wants it to stop. Not a restaurant, but the Gatwick Airport in the UK did a massive survey with 68000 respondents and turned off their music because most respondents said they should.
