YEAH! Its surprising! Id be willing to bet its the byproduct of the overall direction (fit an fps, at that time considered a solidly kb+m game, on console) Like many of Halo's innovations to fit that problem (like robust controller aim assist) it went on to become genre-influencing!

Its kind of silly to say 'this is a great restrictive inventory' about a game with basically two inventory slots, but... it is! The hypothetical version of halo where you carry every weapon half-life style is (imo) a dramatically worse experience.

Halo: Combat Evolved and its descendents! Those game's core combat puzzle lies in having a mere two tools that can't cover every possible range or combatant type and a constant need to replace them (and thus a constant flow of 'oo, that guy has X, i should take it!)

The thing about creative work is that it requires at least a baseline level of hope—for a future, for an audience, for some degree of meaning in the work—that I’m having a difficult time summoning at this point. I know hope is necessary to life, but everything looks bleak.
