They have the polls that show that they're well to the right of the average Dem voter on many key issues, but they keep chasing people who will never vote for them, which depresses turnout and alienates the young voters that they need to attract. It's a self-fufilling prophecy.

I know this. You’re asking the Party to pursue policy to the left of where it stands for raw political power. To win by abandoning its center-right principles. That is the obvious explanation why it’s so mushy on obviously winning issues. It doesn’t WANT to win. Not like that, anyway
