It was a while ago, but IIRC from the year I lived in Dublin, actual Irish people often ordered Black & Tans, which is an apt description of the color and provenance of the ingredients. (But I personally preferred snakebites). TOTALLY agree about the vileness of "car bombs" though!

when I lived there Irish people called them half and halfs though maybe it depends on the bar and age of Irish there. none of my contemporaries would have ever ordered a black and tan
