On my top 10 list of weird looking flowers Nigella is definitely up there. This is a variety called 'Transformer' which is mostly grown for the decorative seedheads. 🌱

It was about a two month process from seeding indoors (mid-March) to planting out (mid-May). The tubers I planted early May are just starting to get some height, they did take forever to sprout!

Adventures in growing dahlias from seed: upper left is 'First Love' which was grown from a tuber saved last year, the other three are from seeds collected from that plant. Fun experiment! The best part is the anticipation, tbh🌱

I can't recommend these single flowering dahlias highly enough for pollinators. This one ('First Love') just opened this morning, an instant magnet for hoverflies and bumble bees. 🌱

Old cabinet door from my local salvage place. I like the pale yellow. If I'm not careful though my garden may turn quickly from "charming" to "junkyard." 🌱

My new Whichford pots have arrived! I was envious that everyone on Gardeners World seems to have an unending supply of these terracotta containers. Pricy and definitely a splurge, but they are supposed to be frost proof. Now to decide what to plant in them! 🌱

Pots sheltering on the front porch from the weather. Yesterday rain (lots), today and tomorrow wind. Then a week of temps in the 70s, maybe I can finally plant my (one) tomato?

Is it a climber? I have one called 'Garden Sun' that is similar but not quite as orange-ish. Looks more like the top right photo sometimes.

Purple toadflax doing it's weedy thing. But how can I hate you with those pretty flower spikes that the bees love? Someone up the road planted this one and it's funny to see it in literally every garden for four blocks. Relatively easy to pull the seedlings, though. 🌱

Rosy Garlic (Allium roseum) blooming in my parking strip through the Eryngium foliage - it loves the horrible sandy soil and is somewhat invasive (I have to pull a lot of it). Don't remember planting this one! Flowers have a nice scent. 🌱

I'm always looking out for unusual colors and variations of violas and pansies. 'Deltini Copperfield' is my favorite - the grower that propagates it in our area just went out of business this spring ☹️ so we'll see if I can keep these going over the summer, and maybe save some seed. 🌱

Bobbie Gentry - Fancy (Capitol, 1970)
Well this one sent me down a rabbit hole. Why did Bobbie stop making music? Where is she? Her recording career was ridiculously short, like only four years. Is she hanging out with Claudine Longet somewhere, comparing notes on how to be a recluse?

Yes, spray them off with water, crush them, or sometimes I just remove the whole bud/leaf if there's a lot. I've been doing this with my honeysuckle because I can spare some of the flowers, and with the help of the birds, hover flies and yellow jackets it's looking good so far.

This was my awkward shady garbage corner near the back gate and fence that was taken over by a gangly viburnum and some ugly struggling plants. Mostly I'm trying to screen out the neighbor's house here. Fuchsia m. 'Aurea' sprouting in the foreground, thought I had killed that! 🌱

No one seems to grow Salvia candelabrum commercially anymore. But what's this? A little seedling growing. So I dug it up, dipped it in rooting hormone and potted it. Looking very sad but it's growing new leaves now! My other attempts to propagate cuttings have failed...so stay tuned. 2/2

🌱 My sad salvia tale. I've had a Candelabra Sage shrub that has bloomed consistently every June for like the last 10 or 12 years. Lovely 4' tall flower spikes that the hummingbirds adored. It became very woody and the hard freeze this winter finally finished it off. 1/2

Same here, though I've read that we were reclassified as 9a in the latest USDA map (though some of my dead tender-ish shrubs did not get the message this winter). Mostly I'm watching the dampness, as I don't want the tubers to rot!

Is is time to plant out dahlias yet? Asking for these guys. Some are further along than others. I've got a few nice dry days with highs in the 60s now but then it gets colder and wetter for 5 days. Maybe I'll at least get their containers ready. 🌱

🌱My order of mostly tender annuals from Select Seeds arrived this week. Whoo! The hummingbirds will be very happy. Might be a little early to plant these while the nights are still in the 40s so I'll maybe pot them up and stick them in the cold frame for awhile. Varieties in the alt text!

Rubenza is cool because the blooms emerge a dark red/rose and fade to a dusky pink, so it looks like you have multi-colored flowers on one plant. Here's a photo, mixed in with Rosetta (too candy pink/stripey for me) and dahlia 'Mystic Fantasy'. Also another vote for Apricotta!
