One reason I like preferential voting systems is that parties that are *hated* do worse than parties that are merely not liked much, even when they get the same percentage of the vote.

Niche quibble. the Australian system of forcing you to mark every preference makes voting more complex than people want. Although there is something wonderful about, eg, putting the candidate foisted on your party by HQ below absolutely everyone else.
