He swallowed, he knew the codes by heart, learned them in school. But that was pen and paper. He looked at his little switch, he wondered if he should ask somebody. But the training was absolute, when ZVZ comes, all traffic is to halt. He wondered how many others were worrying.

It was agonizing. His mind thought of the possibilities. An exercise wouldn't use every line. So it was war, what if they were already outside, cutting his lines? He wasn't allowed to transmit, but they never taught him how long to wait. He couldn't believe it was only a minute.
