New Caledonia, located btwn Australia and Fiji, has a pop of 300k. Indigenous Kanak people make up about 40%. It's been a French territory since 1853 invasion, colonization. Lawmakers in PARIS voted 351 to 153 to change THEIR Constitition % give French citizens right to vote in THEIR elections. /1

For 20 years French govt has been expanding eligibility of French citizens to vote in this settler colony despite 1998 Nouméa Accord to make New Caldonia fully independent. Island has natural resources that have been stolen, native peoples killed, and enslaved ("blackbirding"). I hope they fight.
