I think the problem is that this sort of power is easy to abuse and would require watchers to watch the watchmen. Historically what happens is the state starts using this as a cudgel to quash stories harmful to the state and not in the public interest.

So, many of you are smarter than me and wouldn't fall for this scam, but in case someone out there isn't: I was scammed by a spear phishing scam claiming to be part of Chase Fraud. What threw me was 1) they spoofed the Chase phone number and 2) they had some of my transaction data. Be careful!
