a frustrating thing about liberal and even left-liberal diagnoses of the present moment is that they think but had a few thousand more people in select states voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, the reactionary cause would be fatally stymied abortion would be safe, the Supreme Court progressive, etc

This is nonsense. If Hillary Clinton won the presidency in 2016, all subsequent would not have unfolded otherwise unchanged but more liberal. People *react* to new things, and reactionaries don’t take “no” for an answer. They call the authority illegitimate and find a new one they control instead.
