Humanites developmental editor here. Lots of word of mouth. Some scholars post specific jobs on the EFA website, though most jobs there are not academic and access to the job board is limited to EFA members. I believe indexers/copyeditors also do direct outreach to UPs. www.the-efa.org/hiring/

Seems most folks who wind up doing things like that in the astronomy world largely found gigs by word of mouth or being recommended by a friend/colleague Donโt think I ever heard about any formal systems for it

IME, finding a community of professionals who do the kind of work you do and sharing opportunities and referrals with each other is big. I'm always happy to refer folks on to another editor if I think they're a better fit or have availability when I don't
