My mother used to singsong "did you look YOUR way or did you look MY way?" and then mock me when she found the thing immediately! This is one of the many reasons I am not speaking to my mother, heh. Works for me sometimes: take a photo of the most likely space and turn it upside down

Shakes the brain up enough that if it's right there and your brain won't let you perceive it, you might spot it when the space is upside down and your brain isn't filling in the expected details.
