Those include state underfunding and hostility to cities, tax cut-happy market ideology following Reagan, continued sprawl and growth, eternal residential secretion, and the rapid aging of even more seeming “modern” pipes. Effects hit Jackson all at once, practically, timing thing in part.

Have you checked for stats on boil water notices in the UK? They’ve been pretty common throughout the rural South and in cities in New Orleans over time as well. The Jackson issue was far worse over 2021-23, but the causes weren’t unique, more a matter of the worst timing imaginable.

Aren’t you so informed? Jesus. That was a testing result, disputed by the FEDERAL admin of the water system, and also involved a neighboring water system, in suburban Flowood, that has a separate water supply.

Oh, I watched a chicken man get detained and escorted off the premises of an airplane hangar amid an HW campaign stop in 1992. Doc’d in “The War Room.” (Fun detail: Hangar used by a small aircraft maker granted local incentives. Went bankrupt. Took the same doomed route in two other states later.)

Surprised so few mentioned his appearance on the special. With the line about Santa and Uncle Sam being "one and the same," it was clearly an over-the-top songwriting exercise. It would probably go to #1 on iTunes and be the subject of six Atlantic Monthly hot takes in two days now, though.

Finally emptied the second vodka distillery-produced bottle of hand sanitizer I had around from the early pandemic period, doing so by accidentally spilling sanitizer on my kitchen floor after using it to get red fountain pen ink off my hands. An era has passed.
