The question of whether one can get a good job in higher education seems at least as important as—and certainly worth constant discussion alongside—the question of what kind of job one can get with this or that college degree.

Exactly! More untimeliness, please! Ironically, my inspiration for this column actually came from my feeling like an advice column is the least timely and least important thing right now.

I find this fascinating and yet really really hope that my book on the importance to successful societies of women being able to freely divorce their husbands does not become "timely", despite the move in several U.S. states to try and end no-fault divorce....

I had a bit in earlier drafts saying—& often find myself saying to authors—that usually what makes a book “timely” is something bad and, unfortunately, most of the bad stuff right now seems only to be getting and sure to get worse. Books can address problems—but I’d like there to be fewer problems.

Re UN-timeliness: I have a series editor who lit'rally just told me the other day he thinks the most cutting edge work is behind us. He's not wrong. How many books framed as "notes toward" produce more work in that vein? The novelty fetish means we move on quickly. Often there's so much more to say.

Ah I see what you’re saying! Yes, totally. Yeah confusion about/misapprehension of audience is so common, I think. In writing this I was mindful of “timeliness” implying hopes of a broad reach as well—ie I was letting them get mixed up. Even though Qs of audience/market deserve a sep discussion.

Come for the distinction b/w historical vs discursive timeliness, stay for my confession to a dated & otherwise ridiculous reference to Mitt Romney of all people in my own book. Basically, editors want to know: why this book now? The answer is rly abt yr argument & audience not current events.

So there's a nod to the "flagrant attacks on academic freedom," which is what's right for this context. There was lots more in my head. I'll just say: significance takes many form--especially right now (I know, I know--cliched!)--and leave it at that. For now LOL.

I also honestly wanted to write about un/timeliness b/c I personally have been consumed by the timely--especially the student protests. There was SO MUCH MORE I was thinking about while writing this--attacks on DEI, studies of race, gender, & sexuality, Palestine speech.

In other words I'm mindful of how the humanities esp are often forced to endlessly defend themselves; the institutional push for Big Groundbreaking Novelty is a mess. I wanted to celebrate, eg, social-justice oriented work (I publish lots!) while also celebrating the untimely.

The section abt not confusing current events w/ current convos was hard to write. I am a fan of presentism but also worry abt what sometimes reads as a move--no doubt unintentional!--to capitalize on current crises. No doubt I'm sensitive to this b/c of my home in lit studies.

Also: “as acad publishing moves further to an ‘article economy’ under OA, publishers are increasingly incentivized to reduce the human intervention on each article, & to limit the cost of that intervention where it remains. Sr execs will inevitably target the biggest costs 1st.”

We advanced very quickly to age inappropriate content. I dream of a future moment where his friends are super into Pixar and we can get in on that. But movies are tough in general. They’re generally extended over a few viewings and he has a preference for bad guys and battles. 😬
