Looking at the definition of 'ac-comphist-save', my prime suspect is 'pp', the pretty-printing function it uses to convert the history data structure to text. You could try redefining 'ac-comphist-save', replacing 'pp' with 'prin1', and see if that makes it fast again.

(That's assuming that the "pretty" part of "pretty printing" is what's making it slow, of course.)
