Being a New Englander of origin myself, who now lives in the South, what I found is that the people seem to be self-centered and standoffish but once you break the ice they are just as friendly as anyone else.

I grew up in CT and lived in 3 houses one of which was new in the 80's and didn't have AC. Never really thought much of it but I do remember some hot heat waves too. Now in the mountains of VA we have no AC either but nights are generally cool.
