#FergussonFact - Fergusson attended St Andrews University from 1764-1768 on a scholarship specifically for students with the surname 'Fergusson'! He continued to write about St Andrews throughout his short career, including elegies to the University's porter and Maths professor.

#FergussonFact We've been looking at Fergusson's October 1773 obituary in the Weekly Magazine. Here's our favourite quote: 'When seated, with some select companions, over a friendly bowl, his wit flash'd like lightning, struck the hearers irrestibly, and set the table in a roar'.

#FergussonFact - In 1773, the Weekly Magazine (where many of Robert Fergusson's poems were published), printed thirty-one of his poems. This averages as just fewer than three poems per month! Poems published during 1773 include favourites 'The Ghaists' and 'Leith Races'!

Hi John, yes, we're lucky to have the poems he did write!
Scots is a language of course. This video actually isn't affiliated with the project - there are a couple of great audio recordings on YouTube so I thought it would be nice to share one. We are hoping to do our own audio recordings (1/2)

This is a period when people can act in daft ways, celebrate and be merry!

The first week in November was traditionally the 'All-Hallow Fair' in Edinburgh, where Halloween was celebrated! Fergusson writes of the cold weather and its effects on Edinburgh's inhabitants in the opening stanza of the poem.

Researching the way in which Scots poet Robert Fergusson (1750-74) becomes something of a writer’s writer. Internationally celebrated author Robert Louis Stevenson was perhaps a little more than a fan. He said, ‘I believe Fergusson lives in me.’
