it's actually impressive how uniformly awful the wave of Magical Girls But Fucked Up stories that came out in madoka's wake was. every other time i can think of that a huge hit inspired a trend like that, there was at least *something* worthwhile that came out of it.

if anything the "like a dragon" franchise is vastly underrated for how much they touch on japanese social issues like immigration, imperial war crimes, racism in japan, and even the declining birth rates and aging population. come for the over the top fights and drama, stay for the social commentary

There are a dozen or more Teen Exorcist Squad series on MangaPlus trying to capitalize on Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer's popularity, and it's hard for me to care about any of them because for my money, they've boiled the concept down to its barest of components. There's no meat on the bone.

While I understand the descriptive utility, I feel like the JRPG vs. Western RPG schism has become really harmful to both. While this is a general thought, I'm also thinking in particular of Dragon's Dogma, which often takes lumps for not being either, rather than being assessed on its own merits.

I think there are more memorable modern anime that are able to stand above the crowd than what fans give them credit for. Just looking back at the 2010s I can name plenty of shows that came out in that era that we still talk about and remember fondly.
