Folks, I may have a PhD in history-including US politics history-but the last several years I’ve been working in public health as a science writer. One of my areas of focus is Aging, including Alzheimer’s and related dementias (AD/RD). I find the discourse around Biden really troubling.

I’m not defending ercot, it’s dumb with many problems. But the other utilities in ERCOT have outage maps right now. Centerpoint has an outage map. Weather knocked it out. Greed absolutely could be why it hasn’t been fixed, but it’s not like they don’t have one. It should work the same way as PG&Es.

I want to add context without being a pedant, please believe I’m engaging in good faith. ERCOT isn’t a utility but the overall system operator. Centerpoint is the utility (within ERCOT) that doesn’t have an outage map currently. The map was knocked out from a derecho in May, they usually have one.

I think you are right. West coast PSC/PUC typically are much more functional than the rest of the country. But I don’t think it’s a huge exception for Texas to not have a state wide map. I think it’s unacceptable for outage maps to be unavailable, but I don’t think it reflects every Texas utility.

The tricky part with area is that a portion of it is not in ERCOT, but on the Eastern interconnection. The dividing line goes through the northern Houston suburbs. The portion not in ERCOT has the outage map up and running. It seems like just the Centerpoint portion of ERCOT is missing outage maps.

Ok well that’s a sweeping accusation. I’m sorry if I’ve come off a certain way. I tried to present additional data to refute a point being made, which is hard online. Can you give me an example of a state has a state wide, multi utility outage map? I’ve found it standard that is only by utility

I hear you and it’s total bullshit for centerpoint to not have that available. They can and should complain to the PSC. But over a third of the whataburger map is covered by a different company that has an outage map.

That’s a utility not having its map up, not THE utility not having an outage map. The outage map I posted includes areas in the whataburger screen shot. Centerpoint not having its outage map up =\= Texas doesn’t have an outage map.

Well, the eastern half of that is on the eastern interconnect and absolutely has an outage map. I’m looking at it for my parents house now. Houston itself is on ERCOT and I’d assume there actually is a center point outages map but I haven’t used it.

I moved to Denver from New Orleans partly for climate reasons. I could never comfortably buy a house in New Orleans after doing years of climate research. So I moved somewhere that was *relatively* a safer bet to be around by 2100.
