It’s not working as well it used to. Of course, where I live (Tennessee) the GOP supermajority isn’t even trying to pretend they care about poor kids any longer.

If we’re talking about the Confederacy/South poor whites were used for the purpose of oppressing black people. The poor whites were led to believe they were better. The wealthy never thought that was true.
