Depends on user expectations, but even if not shown I think those metrics are important to craft an engaging feed. A pure chronological algorithm with hidden likes, reposts, follows(?) would make people use social media less. In which case, you may as well do one of those "offline social" apps

That seems to be counter to what things like Google Reader gave folks, no? I guess it also depends on what you're aiming to get out of social media/networking.
