This is one place where I feel like our system is correct. You can be tried and convicted for bad reasons. How many people are in prison today largely just for being in poverty? A former convict who turned their life around and wasn't allowed to run for office would be seen as a travesty.

The travesty here is that this is a malevolent criminal who has not turned things around and keeps announcing his intentions to do more crime, but the check on that is supposed to be the good sense of the people
