The stories you hear/heard about how ridiculous of some of people in the communist parties were very much is akin to what the republicans are now. The SED slogan was "the party is allways right" which meant party members would f.e decree a building to be struturally sound against engineer advise

Chernobyl would not have happened if party leadership listened to scientists and engineers that warned the way the USSR was building nuclear reactor was not safe . So the part would classify that information and forced everybody to shut up and well then one exploded.
