I’m curious if there is a clear migration pattern that started or intensified in and after 2016.

Right? Average rent for a 1BR in Boston is ~3500, and you pay that out to a broker you didn’t hire, who usually acts like you describe, just to sign the contract 💸💸💸

It’s possible to find a place that doesn’t use a broker, but the odds are against renters. I’m hopeful that this will change in Boston and NYC.

Moving to Boston was the first time I paid a brokers fee—not because I hired a broker, but because that’s just what you do here. One month’s rent up front to a broker even though you’ve done all the work is fun. It was a shock. Even w excellent credit, moving to Boston cost 3-4x rent in cash.

Random Microsoft psa: Always double check that your work isn’t saving to your institutional OneDrive. If you switch institutions, you’ll lose that work since backups like Backblaze won’t have ever logged it. This happened to me years ago. I’m def not still bitter about the paper I lost.

The last time I was in a meeting with a university lawyer, they used “client” in place of student and referred to professors providing the university’s clients with services 🤢

Most of my first years are taking 19-21 hours. Many are stressed out to the max and still asking if they can overload *more* which makes me think there’s 1) high anxiety to get everything they can out of their $$$$$$ and 2) a misconception that more majors=more job options.

Meet Mixte! The shelter named her Dracula because she spent her days hiding behind a blanket. I thought she’d be hiding for weeks and months. On day one, she hid in a basket. By day three, she was cuddling, playing, and out and about. It’s day 8 now and Mixte is the queen of the abode.

I’m incensed that universities endorse these essentially for-profit places, treating “non-traditional” students like ATMs. They prey on people who want to learn and improve their economic position. It is abhorrent. She should not need me to avoid these institutions. They should not exist. 2/2

A short story: My mom wants to get her college degree. She wanted to arrange everything herself—without my help. She was so proud to tell me when she started, and I am proud of her. Today, she finally told me where she’s going. It is, essentially, a rebranded for-profit institution. 1/2

I was lucky. The early models I had in political theory assigned an amount of reading that actually gave me time to try to understand and question. I try to do the same in my syllabi. I’d rather they read less and engage more deeply.

We moved a ton throughout my childhood so we all have an aversion to *stuff* Best of luck to you! Who knows, maybe there’ll be a shift. It is hard to say “please stop spending your money giving me things I don’t want/let’s change to experiences” when people find joy in 🎁

We’re small, though. It’s just me, mom, and my sister. A friend with a huge family does secret Santa wherein every member of the extended family gets one other member a gift. Everyone submits a list of desired gifts with options from roughly $30-$100.

Yes. But we focus on experiences, which we can do because we’re geographically close. Dinner, drinks, plays, trips, and free things depending on the year. The only exception is día de los reyes, where mom insists on giving us 1) candy, 2) small, practical thing like hair ties, 3) small cash.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco had me from frame 1. Soon after, we get this remarkable sequence (DP: Adam Newport-Barra), which Joe Talbot and Terri D’Ambrosio set to Michael Nyman’s propulsive Musique à Grand Vitesse (which recurs throughout the film):

Just rewatched Parasite for teaching this week (classes could choose from 2 Ghibli films, 2 Bong Joon-Ho films, and American Utopia—all voted for Parasite). I’m excited for our discussions, but a tiny piece of my psyche at this moment would have loved one of the slightly lighter choices!

There is a line of argument I’ve come across that says the cause is increased social welfare programs, particularly personal retirement funds and social security because they lessen the benefits of raising children 🙄 no other considerations at all

And of course it’s different than sitting in front of your television! You don’t have to factor in travel time or waiting in line or previews…all of which mean you’re giving movies a fair bit more time than their official run time.
