So when I did do private commissions (something I have put a pause on for a long time now and now only do client work) I had about a $150-$250 price range for full color custom portraits and it caused a mini twitter uproar because a few folks balked at the idea and thought I was being greedy/elitist

I don’t understand why this upsets people. Like, dude knows his stuff goes for bananas money on the secondary market, and artists don’t have resale rights in the US. So… why would any artist screw themself for the benefit of rich collectors by lowballing on the primary market? Would be stupid.

id pay the $25K at this quality and qualification level but unfortunately for him I dont have $25K and strongly prefer the aesthetics available for $60

some young art people are insane about pricing, but it’s mostly out of ignorance (i hope). your commission prices were waaaay too cheap for what you put in & your level of craft/visibility. Lee can charge 20-35k for a sketch, because on the secondary market his work goes for 50k-to literal millions

If I ever opened full private commissions again I think people would be mad at the numbers I'd put just because I don't really like doing customs. I have so many ideas already, so many other things I want to spend my time doing that price goes up based on my "convince me" level.

Those prices are low, if anything! That’s barely one cart of groceries! Though I also remember the DeviantArt scene and people throwing tantrums if artists priced commissions at anything higher than $20, that was fun 🙃

Like I said, I don’t do commissions anymore (though never say never) because this price range literally costs me money if I don’t make work at a breakneck pace and would literally have to make 10x-20x as much art compared to one or two editorials or book covers to make the same amount

Oh, I remember that! You actually inspired me and a bunch of my friends to raise our commission prices for both art and writing! Thank you!

oof im so sorry that happened! bonkers that people feel entitled to custom artwork that way... like, if you can't afford a commission from your fave artist sure it's a bummer, but it costs what it costs and the world will not end. there are tons of luxury items i'd surely enjoy but can't afford lol
