"A major Canadian oil field in the province of Saskatchewan would likely have reached the end of its life eight years ago. But thanks to carbon capture and storage..the field could still be producing 1.5 million barrels of oil annually by the year 2100"

I was on the Dutch radio to talk about Judeonationalism, a term I coined to capture the strategic use of antisemitism to justify xenophobia, particularly against Muslims. As with femo- and homonationalism, which instrumentalises women's and gay rights in the same way.

Today, Leila Simona Talani, Matilde Rosina, and I advised employees of the FCDO on migration policy and politics. They asked great questions and I learned so much from Leila and Matilde. It was great 👍 An expert panel with only women, a wanel?

Great news today. My entire dissertation committee accepted my dissertation. I will defend on October 11th in Amsterdam and online. Mark your calendars! Now I'm going to write my acknowledgments. There are so many people to thank. Luckily, I have been keeping a list all these years.

Dus links. Toch?

The strengthening of anti-Muslim racism also strengthens anti-Semitism. Given the nested nature of the two targets of hate, going along with this only weakens the Jewish communities that are claimed to be protected. The End.

In other words, please do not fall for the weaponization of anti-Semitism. Nobody is reducing anti-Semitism by weaponizing it against Muslims.

Anti-Muslimism and anti-Semitism share a cultural logic with anti-Muslimism being stronger but anti-Semitism stemming from anti-Muslim attitudes.

Meanwhile, current research has established a robust link between the dislike toward Muslims and dislike toward Jews, and how fringe groups organize the dissemination of hate for both groups:

But please do not be fooled that the people using anti-Semitism to justify anti-Muslim racism are genuine, or helping the Jewish cause for that matter. It is entirely possible that, “philosemitism” is being abused to further an anti-Muslim agenda. Future research needs to prove this.

This time, however, the weapon is anti-Semitism. Another common “civilizational” weapon against Muslims, particularly salient in light of the atrocities going on in Gaza and the protesters speaking out against genocide.

In this paper, I show that those who are most likely to be against same-sex adoption, are also those who are most likely to stereotype Muslim politicians as homophobic.
Those who do not hold homophobic attitudes, do not stereotype Muslim politicians as such either. doi.org/10.1016/j.el...

Because these causes are so civil, just and liberal, they both appeal to and weaken the Left of the political spectrum, by causing confusion and insecurity about standing up against anti-Muslim racism.

Political elites often use “civilizational” rhetoric to justify hatred against Muslims, drawing on just, civil and liberal causes such as gender equality, gay rights and freedom of speech.

In this study, I reveal severe bias against Muslim politicians, as well as politicians who stand up for religious rights for Muslims:

Seeing Muslims as a Trojan Horse is nothing new and the consequences are dire. This article by Sarah Bracke et al. lays out the origins and dangers of how Replacement Theory uses biopolitics and eugenics to avert the supposed threat of Muslims:

I study minoritized groups with survey research in Europe. That is really hard to gather data on, and a constant struggle. I feel it is valued, but it is also difficult to see how easy it is to work with existing data. Maybe I'm underestimating it, though.

Here is a column I wrote about "broadstancers:" Underrepresented/minority politicians who broaden their electoral appeal by distancing themselves from their own group. In this column, I link it to Muslim politicians and my data is from FR+DE+NL, but I argue this is a generalizable phenomenon.

People with stronger extrinsic values (attachment to "prestige, status, image, fame, power and wealth") are more likely to feel dissatisfied by not being a winner all the time ...and vote for Trump. This is an empirical question! Yay for us social scientists. Easy to study with surveys.
